New Project in development

KATO - an animated family feature

Dk Fiction is in the development of a new family feature. It tells the story about being bullied, developing empathy and achieving more courage in life.

Dk Fiction interview by film magazine Cinema Scandinavia:

Where did you find the idea for The Lost Ones?

Dariusz: “The economic crisis back in 2007-8 made me think of all those who were forced to leave there home and end up on the bench. I myself have had a difficult time and also ended up on the bench in a park in Copenhagen centre. After a while, it occurred to me that I was sitting next to a homeless man. And then we began to talk. He looked ill, worn down and burned out, but he spoke like a ’life-wise professor’. I remember when I walked away form him my thoughts were positive and hopeful, although my problems had not disappeared.”

The Lost Ones

The eccentric, white-bearded Rolf has turned his back on his family and chosen to live in Copenhagen's Ørsted Park. One night, he meets Helle, who has committed too many blunders in her increasingly lonely life. In a desperate attempt to turn around her fortunes, she has now also lost her job. And her connection to her adult daughter. But only like a stranger can, Rolf manages to listen and bring up years of repressed emotions and dreams up to the surface.

14 years after “Charlie Butterfly”, Dariusz Steiness is back with a mature and wise film about warming each other and finding the strength to look both inward and forward. He charmingly manages to give the down-to-earth a touch of adventure, balancing between the mysterious messiah-like Rolf and the recognisably lonely Danish everyday life, which all the characters of the story are rooted in. They are the people we pass on the street and sit next to on the bus, who are here given a voice and a heart. Excellently played by actors such as Vibeke Ankjær, Laura Drasbæk, Pauli Ryberg and the Swedish Björn Andrésen as Rolf, who has starred in both Visconti's “Death in Venice” and Roy Andersson's “A Love Story”.

Motto A good story is like nature, it can stun you with its force.
Summary Through my work as an actress, my curiosity of the process of filmmaking emerged. In 2006, I was given a chance to experience the very centre of the Scandinavian film industry - at Zentropa. I worked as a production assistant at Zentropa Interaction and during this three-year journey in the world of movies, I got a taste for producing and it sparked a dream to one day, in fellowship with other passionate filmmakers, produce relevant stories. I decided to acquire more skills within film production and became a frequent user of the supplementary training program at the National Film School of Denmark and the Short & Documentary Film School in Lyngby. As part of my education I produced and directed the short film “Standby” in association with C:NTACT and the Betty Nansen Theatre. I further developed my skills as a production manager at Freeport Media. Here we produced a number of TV & documentary productions.   Fiction, however holds my heart, and in 2012 the dream came true. I met director Dariusz Steiness. Together we established dk fiction, a company where we both can develop our visions for creating memorable movies.   The same year we started producing our first feature film “The Lost Ones”.

Motto “Imagination means nothing without doing.”
― Charlie Chaplin
Summary At the age of 20, by chance, I found myself in a TV studio. Suddenly the cameras, lights, stage, people, and above all the energy of concentration surrounded me. I fell in love and Channel 2 was my apprenticeship for 4 years. I learned from the best in Danish film industry. During weekends we experimented and made short films. The passion grew. I found a mentor in Stein Lejkanger, an advertising film director. I assisted and learned from Stein on commercials produced by Locomotion Kofod Schiller. Here I also had my debut as a director. The following 8 years I directed commercials, music videos, documentaries and television programs. Besides the beauty my focus has been on the technical and financial side of filmmaking. Today these two factors give me the ability to manage filmmaking with the necessary overview. My first feature film "Charlie Butterfly" from 2002, was produced by Zentropa with support from The Danish Film Institute. To challenge the Dogme95, which dominated at that time, we made a timeless painting of a movie. It contained spectacular images based on strongly written story, by novelist Klaus Rifbjerg, about a man who struggles his way back on track after having destroyed everything around him. The collaboration with Klaus Rifbjerg greatly inspired me to continue writing and developing my own stories. The following years I was part of the Zentropa family and with DFI support I wrote and developed four feature films and one TV series. I also had the pleasure and honour of assisting Lars Von Trier on "Manderlay" and work as script consultant on "Antichrist".   In 2012 producer and actress Katrine Hartmann and I founded dk fiction. A company in which we can further develop our visions for creating good movies. That same year we started producing our first feature film together, “The Lost Ones”.
